2024 Houska Prize Review

Austria’s top research projects were honoured on 25 April 2024 with the acclaimed Houska Prize from the B&C Private Foundation. Out of 73 submissions the best 15 projects - five projects each in the categories "University Research" and "Non-University Research" and "Research & Development in SMEs" - were selected for the final. For the first time the Marialla-Schurz-Prize was awardedin honor of Mariella Schurz, the long-time General Secretary of the B&C Private Foundation. Guest speaker at the Houska Talk was Sandra Wachter who holds a doctorate in Law and is an internationally renowned expert in the field of IT at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. She gave a talk entitled "How intelligent ist artificial intelligence". Host of the award ceremony was once more the Austrian Puls 4 anchor woman Isabella Richtar.

IMBA, Joanneum Research and Incus win the 2024 Houska Prize

In the Higher Education Research category, Jürgen Knoblich from the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) won the main prize for his research project “Organoid Model of Human Brain Development and Disorders”. Katrin Tiffner from the Joanneum Research convinced the jury in the category Non-University Research with her research achievements on “Dermal Open Microperfusion”. In the Research & Development in SMEs category, Gerald Mitteramskogler from the Viennese company Incus impressed the expert jury and the members of the advisory committee, taking away the golden Houska Prize trophy for “LMM – Metal 3D Printing with Light”.

The “Feeblin” project by Giulio Superti-Furga and his team from the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) received the Mariella-Schurz-Prize for a new therapeutic approach to autoimmune diseases.
